C., held at Wilminton, June 6, 1776: "Resolved, that Robert Rayford be appointed Adjutant of one of the two Battalions of the Militia Brigade now at Wilmington under the Command of B. G. Ashe." Nathaniel Greene, dated Nov. 17, 1782, stating that "at the last County Court held in Bladen, Captain Raiford led a mob of about thirty armed persons into the Court House while the Court was sitting, and furiously attacked Mr. McLain, Lawyer of eminence in this State, at the bar with a naked sword, beat and dangerously wounded him, unarmed in the exercise of his progession, before the Court; under the pretence that 'the said MaClain had given him sometime before abusive language, and was then defending a Tory.'" Martin, dated Jan. 5, 1783, saying that he had looked into the matter thoroughly and that "his conduct (was) far less blamable than has been represented to you." Also asks for the wishes of the governor for further action. (IBID., Vol 16, page 740) Charges appear to have been dropped. No additional action found. Qualifies for promotion to Brevet Major as per letter from Joseph Carleton, War Department, to General Sumner, dated Feb. 18, 1784. (IBID., Vol 17, page 132) Commission received May 11, 1784.
