"JOHN VEASY BROWNING son of FRANK J. and SARAH P. BROWNING ws born July 28, 1844 in Clark County Ark. He volunteered in the Confederate army at Mt. Pisgah Methodist camp ground in Clark county Ark. Sept 1, 1861. there were two squads of them; one from Amity, Clark County, united at Arkadelphia and elected officers as follows: Dr. John W. Hanson, Captain; Jesse A. Ross first Lieutenant; Almira M. Tennison second Lieutenant; Martin Dedwilly, third lieutentant. Then they went to Little Rock and joined the Fourth Battalion afterwards known as Ross' Battalion and sworn into the confederate service. They they went to Columbus, KY where twenty-four of his company died of measles. He was then under Gen Plk and went from Columbus Ky. to Memphis Tenn then to Cornith Miss and at Farmington seven miles from there was the first battle he was in. then at Richmond, Ky (I can't give the dates) and then he was in the Battle at Murfreesboro, Tenn where he was wounded in the body by Gen, Braxton's brigade. There the wounded soldiers were loaded in box cars and sent to a hospital there being a good long train of them (I forget where the hospital was, but it was either at Chattanooga or Memphis, Tenn. The train wrecked and killed all but 30 men. These were the giggest battles in which he fought, but he was in many we would call skirmish fights one being on the 12th of July, after the fall of Vicksburg, Miss. There were 64 in his company, which was Co. C. Fourth Arkansas Battalion. The most of his soldiering was done in the Infantry and while riding a firy horse somewhere in Tennessee he got all the flesh rolled off his left leg causing a wound that went with him to his grave. At the time he liked to have bled to death and was sent home. T.B. Jones came with him and they were at home when the surrender came. He went to Camden, Ark. and took the oath of allegiance. He was first married to Mrs. SARAH ELIZABETH HARRIS July 28, 1866 and to this union were born two children, a son and a daughter. He again married Miss MARTHA JANE BUNN June 4, 1871 and to this union were born 6 children, 4 girls and 2 boys. She died June 6, 1905. In 1906 he went to Texas and married Miss ELLA VANCE Oct 14, 1909. they came to the Confederate Home at Sweet Home, Ark. in 1923 and lived there most of the time until his death which occurred March 14, 1931. I don't know at just what age he was coverted but have heard him say that his first wife led him to Christ. He leaves a wife and three daughters to mourn their loss. Mrs. A.J. RICKETTS of Muskogee, Okla., Mrs. EUNICE STUDDARD and Mrs. B.E. BREWER. He was laid to rest in the Confederate graveyard at Little Rock, Ark. Carefully submited by his baby that is living, Mrs. B.E. Brewer." (Southern Standard, Mar 26, 1931.)
