Individual Details
Charles Moyer Martin Sr.
(May 29, 1893 - October 27, 1976)
"When Moyer's [Martin's] father made his final move to West Virginia, Moyer was twelve years old, and only two years later Moyer, too, was working in the mines. He was a miner until 1917, at which time he decided to go to barber school. Upon graduation from the barber school, he operated a barber shop for a year, but then decided to expand into general merchandising. After twenty years of operating his merchandising store in McComas, he wanted another challenge. In 1939, he opened a furniture store in Yukon, West Virginia and soon expanded to a second one in Bluewell, on the outskirts of Bluefield, West Virginia.
"Even though Moyer ended his formal education at an early age, he continued to show his innate intelligence in numerous ventures. While living in McComas he built a carbide plant that made gas powered batteries which created the electricity for both his house and store.
"Moyer and Nina, who worked as his partner throughout their career in merchandising, retired and moved to Abingdon, Virginia where Moyer died, from complications of the heart. Moyer was a lifetime member of the Beni Kedem Temple in Bluefield, West Virginia. Nina now lives (1984) in Bluefield, West Virginia." (ACROSS THE BLUE RIDGE, 1984, by Billie Redding Lewis, page 177.)
