Albert Forest Cantrell

(September 5, 1901 - October 9, 1984)

"Albert Forest Cantrell and Alfia Taylor Cantrell were twins. When Albert was four years old, his father moved the young family to his native DeKalb County, Tennessee, where he was occupied as a civil engineer. Albert begain his education at the old Antioch schoolhouse near their home in Keltonburg, where he finished the third grade. The family moved back to Nashville in 1910. It is not known where the children attended school at that time but one of Albert's daughters said he only finished the fourth grade of elementry school. Albert married Effie Devona Shearron. She was an older sister of Willie Ina Shearron who had married Albert's younger brother, Leo Alexander Cantrell.

"Albert and Effie are believed to have lived with or near her (Effie's) widowed mother on the farm in Montgomery County, Tennessee where he farmed with his brothers-in-law for a brief period of time. Albert's and Effie's first child, a boy, was born premature in November 1929 and died the same day. Their second child lived less than a year. Their third child, Cora Viola Cantrell, was named for both grandmothers. Effie died from kidney poisoning, one week after Cora was born. Cora lived with her widowed grandmother, Hettie Viola Shearron until she married.

"Albert married second, Lula Denton McCandless. They had eight children and lived most of their married life in the East Nashville area. Albert was a large man, well over 200 pounds most of his adult life. He suffered from fallen arches, poor circulation and joint problems in his legs forcing him to walk with support canes and later, use a wheel chair. Even in spite of his disabilty he held two jobs most of this working years. Peggy Cantrell Willis, a daughter, said that her father was a loving man and always had time to stop and play games with his children. This writer has fond memories of Uncle Albert, who was remembered as a highly intelligent, jovial, prankster of a man with a great sense of humor and an always ready, heartly, enjoyable laugh one could hear all around. When complications from poor circulation resulted in the necessary amputation of his right leg, he jokingly said to this writer's mother, "Well Willie, a pair of socks will last me twice as long now but I'll have to figure out how to get two left shoes as a pair too!" The man could turn a tear into laughter every time, and Bettye Hudgens, another daughter.

"Even as a young man, Albert always limped from problems with his feet and legs and eventually was confined to a wheel chair in the early 1970's. He retired in 1965." (THE FAMILY OF CHARLES PATTERSON CANTRELL AND CORA GUSTAVA HUNT, by Charles Thomas Cantrell, 1995, pages 67, 71 and 72.)
