Joshua Greer

(December 18, 1803 - )

"There is proof that the Joshua Greer who married Nancy Cerley was NOT the son of Jesse and Mary/Polly Morris Greer. I'll have to dig out the proof, but its in court records for Caldwell and Wilkes Co. I know that is not the popular belief and I will find and post the records that prove this. These are records found in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh and cover several generations through land and probate records." (Mary Floy Katzman, email: maryfloy@mkatzman.tiac.net>.)

1840 Washington County, Virginia census: Joshua GREER - 1 male 0-5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40; 2 females 0-5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40.

"Quite a few years ago, someone from Manchester, KY wrote and asked if I knew anything about Martha Greer who married and moved to KY. She was listed in the Washington Co., VA 1850 census. I believe she married Isaac Hollingsworth. (I'm going from memory here.) In the letter, the gentleman stated that George Washington Greer (perhaps a cousin) left home because he couldn't get along with his step-mother. And that he married Mary Rowland and they lived in Clay Co., KY. There is a marriage for a Joshua Greer and Nancy Blevins in Washington Co., VA I believe around 1846 or so. The 1850 Washington Co., VA census shows children in the household born before and after this marriage. In my opinion, this Joshua Greer was Jesse and Mary/Polly Morris Greer's son. That Nancy Blevins was his 2nd wife (1st wife unidentified) and that George Washington Greer was his son by his 1st wife. I also believe there were other children who were sent to live with other family members after the 2nd marriage, including Margaret Greer, born 1842 in VA who was raised by Jesse Greer, Jr. and his wife Frances/Franky Brown Greer. If you read the Francis Marion Wilcox Journal, there is an account of 8 men deserting from the 58th NC Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. They made their way towards Pike Co., KY, but 4 of them stopped in Manchester, KY. Two or three of them were Greers. In a nutshell, that's my opinion."
