William Nathaniel "Billie" Greer Rev.

(November 24, 1873 - November 29, 1951)

"William Greer, also called Brother Billy Greer, was an active figure in the Kimball and Kopperl area. He started school at Kimball in teh building whose walls still stand on highway 174 near the Brazos bridge. He continued school at Kopperl after his family moved there. As a young man he worked as a cowboy on the XIT ranch at Bovina, Texas, also on other ranches in New Mexico and Arizona. Afterwards he returned to Bosque County where he ranched and farmed, before becoming a Baptist preacher in his early forties. He preached at Union Hill, Kimball, Huron, Steiner and Cedron among other places. He baptized many people, about sixty at one time in the Mesquite Creek in the Duvall pasture, and seventy-five one time at the Brazos crossing at Kimball, to name only two examples. He performed the marriage ceremony for many young people of the area. While he was preaching, he would sometimes tell incidences of his cowboy days which are remembered by senior citizens now who were the young people of the area. He once told of a time when it was extremely cold. They fed corn to fatten hogs. On account of the blizzard they dashed out and threw the corn in the pen then rushed back into the house. After about the third day they found that the hogs had frozen on foot with the uneaten corn in front of them. Also, he told that a man on a nearby ranch was sick and the cowboys took turns "sitting up" with him at night. All had sat up but the new cowhand before the man died. The new one was asked to sit up with and old cowhand. He agreed. In the night the old cowboy left the room locking the door behind him. Soon the corpse sat up. The new cowboy could not get out the door, so he dived out a window before learning it was and initiation joke." (BOSQUE COUNTY: LAND AND PEOPLE, 1985 "Nathanial Hunt Greer," by M. S. Greer, page 330.)

"Billie Greer died at 4:30 p.m., several weeks after a stroke. His funeral was at 3 p.m." (William Greer, Illinois, 1995.)
