(February 2, 1938 - March 28, 1942)

"Falls Off Truck - Child is Killed. Four Year Old Charles Hammonds of Vaden is Victum - Charles, four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elsie Hammonds of the Vaden community, died almost instantly when he was struck or runover by his father's truck near their home Saturday afternoon. Vaden is 25 miles south of here. According to Mr. Murry, who had charge of the funeral, there were five children on a truck load of sacked feed and the little fellow climbed up to the top of the sacks. His brothers and sisters pulled him back, but he got up there again and the truck hit a bump in the road, pitching him off. His skull was crushed. This was the second time that such a tragedy has visited the Hammond's home, as three years ago their 15 year old daughter suffered a similar fate. She was killed by the family truck. Funeral services for the little boy were held at Hammonds Chapel at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The rites were conducted by Rev. Harvey of this city."
