James Cantrell

(Abt, 1776 - Bef January 10, 1838)

"James Cantrell was probably born in Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina before the Revolutionary War. He received a grant of land in Spartanburg County, South Carolina (No date). He was given as head of a family, in the census of 1790 and is remembered by the older members of the family as having settled, with his brother Isaac, in South Carolina, according to traditions there, before any others of the name had come to that section. He married Peggy _______. James owned large tracts of land on Pacolet River. His will was probated January 10, 1838, and his wife, Peggy, was executrix." (THE CANTRILL - CANTRELL GENEALOGY, 1908, by Susan Cantrill Christie, pages 144 - 145.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: If James Cantrell's father, Isaac married and moved to North Carolina, then it is doubtful that any of Isaac's children were born in Pennsylvania.)
