"Little Rock Woman Crushed by Semi's Rear Wheels by Joe Holmes (Deocrat Staff Writer) --- A 43 year old Little Rock woman was killed Monday afternoon in a freak accident when she was crushed by a tractor-trailer truck at the intersection of University Avenue and Markham Street. Nancy Mae Gadberry of 407 E. 10th Street, was struck about 2:55 p. m. as she was walking next to the curb in the turn lane on the sourhwest corner of the intersection. The truck was owner by Affiliated Foods of Little Rock, and was being driven by Leslie Lee Jewell, 323, of North Little Rock. The truck was turning off Markham Street in the access lane for the southbound lane of University Avenue when it struck Ms. Gadberry. A witnes to the accident said she saw Ms. Gadberry walking next to the curb, and as the truck approached, the witness said shw screamed at Ms. Gadberry to jump over the retaining wall to avoid the truck. The witness said she saw Ms. Gadberry put her hands on the big dual-wheels of the trailer of the truck in an attempt to keep them from running over her.

"According to a police report, Ms. Gadberry was crushed by the sheels, which ran over the curb and slipped over the side of the retaining wall, takin Ms. Gadberry with them. Mx. Gadberry was pinned between the wheels and the retaining wall and was dragged 19 feet, 2 inched, before her body fell to the parking lot below, the report said. She was taken to St. Vincent Infirmary, when she was pronounced dead a few minutes later. Jewell told police he saw Ms. Gadberry when he passed her in the truck while making the turn, but thought she was clear of the trailer. He said he then felt the trailer wheels run off the side of the retaining wall. Jewell told police he did not see the sign located about 163 feet west of the intersection, which prohibits trucks larger than 8,000 pounds from trying to negotiate the turn. Several accidents involving tractor trailer trucks unable to negotiate the turn have occurred in past years." (ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT, Little Rock, Arkansas, Tuesday, November 17, 1981, page 1A and 8A.)

"No Other Counts Filed in Fatal Accident --- No further charges were filed Tuesday in connection with the death of a Little Rock woman who was crushed in a freak accident Monday. Nancy Mae Gadberry, 43, of 407 E. 10th Street was killed when a tractor trailer truck owned by affiliated Foods, Inc. Slipped over a retaining wall at the intersection of markham Street and University Avenue, crushing her. Ms. Gadberry, who had been walking along the curb on University Avenue, was trapped between the truck's right rear wheels and the retaining wall. She was dragged about 19 feet before falling to the pavement below. She was taken to St. Vincent Infirmary, where she died a short time later. The truck driver, Leslie Lee Jewell, 32, of North Little Rock, was cited by Little Rock police for failure to obey traffic control devices. There are signs posted along Markham Street warning wide trucks of the hazardous right turn at that intersection. Additional charges may be filed by the city attorney's office after the police report on the incident has been filed in that office, Deputy City Attorney Bob Taylor said. Those reports would probably be filed Tuesday afternoon, he said. In the past few years, there have been about 5 accidents involving tractor trailer trucks attempting to make the sharp right turn at that intersection, said Lt. R. L. "Bert" Jenkins of the Little Rock Police Department.
