Felix Simonton

(December 18, 1785 - August 30, 1875)

"Felix Simonton was born in Rowan County, North Carolina and when a small boy, the family moved from North Carolina to Georgia in about 1788 with his father Adam, and Mother Margaret, and Robert Simonton's widow, Margaret. Felix's father Adam received land in Greene County, Georgia for being a Revolutionary War Veteran. Felix was shown in the 1820 Greene County, Georgia census. Felix received land in the 1820 Georgia Lottery in Newton County and he and his family and his brother Ezekiel, who was married to the sister of Felix's wife, moved to Newton County and were there in 1832 according to a legal paper filed in that county. Felix was commissioned a Justice of the Inferior court on 30 January 1833, Newton County and resigned his commission 14 March 1834. Felix and his brother Ezekiel were succesfull in receiving land in the Georgia Land Lotteries and both lived in Newton County until Felix again received land in a Georgia land lottery in Troup County, Georgia and in 1835 he moved to Troupe County Georgia. The land he held in Troupe County is now under water in West Point Lake. After their son Dr. William Greer Simonton died inTroupe County and was buried in the West Point, Georgia Cemetery, the family left and moved to Chambers County, Alabama. While living in Chambers County, Alabama, a daughter and Felix's first wife Sarah died and again they were buried in the West Point Cemetery. In the 1840 's the family moved to Coosa County, Alabama. Felix, as most other aggressive family heads, sought after an inprovement in their estate and each time these early pioneers moved on west they were able to acquire land at a much lower cost than the land that they sold in the place they left. In the 1850 census of Coosa County, Alabama, it showed that Felix had acquired 1200 acres of land and that his first wife had died and he had remarried to Nancy Mary Graham (Stuart). Felix was an appraiser and also shown as a Justice of the Peace in Coosa County records. In 1851, Felix and the remaining children who had not married or died in East Alabama and West Georgia area picked up stakes again and moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana as recorded in land transactions and by the Cash Certificate 8445 and 8446 issued to Felix Simonton for land in this Parish. After coming to Louisiana, Felix and his wife Mary were very close with one of his younger sons Augustus Chamberlin and his wife Mary who was a daughter of Felix's second wife Mary Stuart by her first marriage. The Bible record of the Felix Simonton family was left with Dr. A. C.Simonton and is testified to in a statement made by Thomas Garrett in 1898, that on July 27th 1879, 4 years after the death of Felix in 1875. It is important to note that in this bible record written in the hand of Felix, the birth date of Adam Simonton, Felix's father and also his mother Margaret was noted. This evidence indicates that Adam was born in 1744 which proves that he was born in Pennsylvania because the settlement opportunity in Anson and later in Rowan County was not open until around 1749 and 1750 which is when Adams father, Robert first came to these counties to acquire land for his family. It furthur proves that Robert Simonton married in Pennsylvania." (Jackie Keasler Helmke, jhelmke@sbcglobal.net, 2004.)
