Individual Details
Rev. Jonathan Newman Jr.
(August 13, 1796 - February 16, 1879)
"Jonathan Newman married Ann Elizabeth Jordan on May 6, 1817." (Warren County, Georgia Marriage Register, 1817.)
1820 Jefferson County, Mississippi census: Jonathan NEWMAN, Jr.; 3 males under 10 (Alfred Clayton was the only child born before 1820, so most likely the census taker was in error, as the births and deaths of this family were carefully entered into the family Bible.) 1 male 16 to 26 (Jonathan NEWMAN, Jr.); 1 female 16 to 26 (Ann Elizabeth NEWMAN).
In 1827 Jonathan and his brother, Lemuel, had settled in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.
In 1847 Lemuel deeds three and a half acres of his land for the building of the Bayou Bartholomew Baptist Church, of which his brother Jonathan was the minister.
1850 Ouachita Parish, Louisiana census, Dwelling/Family # 343/353: Jonathan NEWMAN, 54, Min. of Gospel B. (Baptist?), $4500 Real Estate, Geo; Ann Elizabeth NEWMAN, 51, Geo; Jonathan NEWMAN, Jr., 21, Farmer, La; Lemuel NEWMAN, 15, La; Ary (Amy?) Amanda NEWMAN, 10, La.
By 1855 Jonathan and his wife, Ann, came to Texas to join their sons. They settled in Goliad County and in August 1875 Jonathan purchased 100 acres of land fronting the west bank of Sarco Creek in Goliad, Texas. During the later years of Jonathan's life he became blind, but this did not keep him from preaching the Word of God; usually he was able to quote scriptures from memory, however, when it was necessary for him to read, his wife Ann read the scriptures for him. Jonathan died February 16, 1879 in Blanconia, Texas, and was buried in Blanconia Baptist Cemetery. Ann Newman died March of 1888 near Uvalde, Texas on the farm of her daughter Ary, who had married John Enos Coleman. Ann was buried on the farm in Uvalde, Texas.
