Frank Hunt, Ex-Sheriff
Of San Patricio, Dies
Caller-Times News Service
SINTON - Frank Hunt, sheriff of San Patricio County for more than 30 years before his retirement in 1960, died at a local hospital last night. He was 77. Funeral services are tentatively set for 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Church of Christi with Maurice Barnett, minister, officiating.
HUNT WAS first elected sheriff of San Patricio County in 1922 and served until defeated by J. E. Holbrook in 1940. Eight years later he again ran for the office and lacked only 41 votes winning in the first primary against five opponents. He won easily in the runoff primary and the commissioners court then appointed him to fill out the unexpired term of Alonzo Tomlinson, who had died in office.
This was Hunt's only time to face a runoff even though he never ran without opposition. Prior to his election as San Patricio County sheriff, he served five years as a deputy in Live Oak County under Sheriff D. L. Tullos and three terms as constable of the Mathis precinct.
A NATIVE of Williamson County, Hunt moved to San Patricio County in 1901 when his father was employed by the Taft Ranch. The family moved to the Porter Ranch west of Mathis in 1907 and Hunt was appointed Live Oak County deputy the following year.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Hunt of Sinton; four sons, Sam Jr., of Columbia, Miss., Jerry A. of Calallen, Lewis W. of Tyler, and Robert of Sinson; two daughters, Mrs. Harold McKee and Mrs. Robert N. Johnson of Sinton; a foster daughter, Mrs. Jack Bishop of Sinton; three sisters, Mrs. Tansy Hornbeak of Merrill, Ore., Miss Percy Hunt and Mrs. Bertha Smith of Robstown; two brothers, Henry and Bud of Robstown; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
