Frances Dejarnette Pickett
(June 26, 1812 - June 18, 1881)
"Frances DeJarnette Pickett, the eldest child of Martin Pickett and his wife, Nancy Raiford, was born June 26, 1812, and died June 18, 1881. On April 17, 1827, she was married to John Grady, Jr., and lived in that section of Anson County long known as Sneedsborough. Squire John Grady was a large landowner and before the War Between the States had many slaves. He was a Justice of the Peace in Anson County, and in the year 1836 was a Representative to the House of Representatives from Anson County. John Grady and his wife, Frances, established a fine God fearing family, and were an inspiration to their community in their spiritual life, and neighborliness. They gave a large tract of land on the East side of the Highway between Morven and McFarlan in Anson County for the erection of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, and a cemetery adjoining, which still stands and serves to the glory of God. Frances was a woman of keen intellect, culture and education. Her high ideals of life were perpetuated through her children and her children's children to this day wherever they are found. Her rare literary ability is evidenced by some of her writings which still are being treasured by her family. John and Frances had seven daughters and only one son, Marcus Clay, who died young. Their daughters married and established homes throughout Anson County, and the state. Their daughters were: L. Susan Harriet, who married George W. Kendall; Nancy Raiford, who died in infancy; Mary Jane, who married Hugh Chatman; Sarah Ann, who married Joseph Grayson; Margaret Statira, who married George Cotton Radcliff; Martha Frances, married to Dinwiddie Cottingham; and Judy Helen, married to Elijah Wellington Radcliff."
