"Hammonds Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Hammonds Chapel was organized about 1900. It is located approximately nine miles east - northeast of Whelen Springs and ten miles south of Gurdon on the north side of the Kansas - Loop Road. On September 6, 1904, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hammonds deeded the acre of land on which the church currently stands. The church is affiliated with the Baptist Missionary Association and with the Clark Baptist Association. In 1933 the church burned, and was soon rebuilt at the same location. Minutes date back to 1927. The church celebrated its first homecoming in August of 1943. Charter members include Rev. Hamilton (pastor when the church was organized), Margaret Hughes Gogle, Becky Langley Hamilton, Rebecca Hughes, John Langley, Lucy Stone McClure, Henry Scoggins, Ida Kay Scoggins, John A. Scott, Mary Birdwell Scott, Ella Coon Langley Stephens, Beulah Scott Thompson, and Holmes Wilson." (CLARK COUNTY, ARKANSAS, 1992, Clark County Historical Association, page 197.)

"Dave Hammonds owned land around the Vaden area. He built a large house, one of the earliest to have gas lights in the area. It is said that he found some buried money and this is where he got money to buy land and other goods. Another story is that he was repaid for a debt someone owed him in earlier days. He did help many people when times were hard and had no food." (Rosie Pitts, 1996.)
