(Abt, 1813 - March, 1870)
"This was an interesting situation. Gwin Dudley had a number of children by Jane Kemp, a slave, who very likely came with him from Franklin County, Virginia and by whom he had children, I believe, before he ever left Virginia. He married her, to all intents and purposes, on his deathbed because he owned property that would have gone to his brother, William, according to the wording on the deed at the time of his death, unless he had heirs and Jane Kemp English and their children would not have been considered his heirs if he had not married her. One of the descendants of Gwin Dudley English's brother, William, found this all out and has not been able to trace what happened to this wife and children of Gwin Dudley English." (Betty G. Martin, November 2003.)
