Stephen English

(Abt, 1794 - )

"There is a long lawsuit begun in 1829 against him for taking some of his slaves and the slaves of a few other residents, which they entrusted to him, to sell in Greene County, Georgia. This lawsuit went on for years and in the middle of it, it was changed from reading against Stephen English to being against the estate of Stephen English. This case went all the way to the courts in Richmond. Evidently two or three of Stephen's brothers went with him and returned with money to the owners of some of the slaves, but Stephen was gone for a long time and some of the other owners decided he had absconded with the money. Evidently at some point they discovered that Stephen had died and that was when the case changed over to being against his estate. I have papers on this case and will be happy to send copies of them to you if you would like to see them. I have always wondered what really happened to Stephen because there is no record of him having returned to Franklin County." (Beverly G. Martin.)
