Joel Petty

(1779 - 1819)

The tragic death of Joel Petty has become a family legend. He was bitten by a sick dog he had been caring for. The dog later died of rabies. Thereafter, Petty told his family to chain him to a tree in the yard where he ate and slept until his terrible death. It is believed he died in Tennessee about 1819, possibly in the area of Hardin and McNairy counties.

Not much is known about Joel Petty except that he lived in North Carolina when his older children were born and he moved to Tennessee later where he died. It is said that Joel Petty had 12 sons but only 6 of that number ever came to a place in Bastrop County that afterward became known as Pettytown. There are other Pettys buried in the cemetery at Bastrop, Texas, who could have been some of those sons.

The Petty sons who came to Pettytown were Theophilus, John, Joel Jr., Johnathan, Hubert and Dock Petty. Just where these other Pettys went after leaving Pettytown is not known; but, this fact lead us to believe that almost anyone that we might meet by the name of Petty could be related to the Pettys of Pettytown. The 1860 U. S. Census taken from Bastrop County gave the name of Theophilus Petty, Wife Charlotte and two children as living there in that year.

Teeny confered with me, Barbara Spray, and together, we agreed on this possibility. Call it an educated guess.

Joel Petty born ca 1779 in Moore Co., North Carolina may have had a twin brother, John Petty. This John Petty can be found on the 1850 Census of Carroll Co., AR, where his wife is given as Polly. She was also known as Mary. Joel is said to have died of rabies in 1819, possibly in Wayne or Hardin Co., TN. The name of Joel's wife is not known.

Hubbard Petty and wife Mary are believed to be the parents of Joel. Hubbard was born 1741-1745 in Orange Co, VA. He married ca 1766 in Orange Co., NC. He died after 1820, possibly in Wayne Co., TN. Hubbard is found on the 1820 Census of Wayne Co., TN.

William Petty and wife Elizabeth are believed to be the parents of Hubbard. William was born ca 1710 in Richmond Co., VA and married about 1732. He died about 1770 in Orange Co, NC.

Thomas Petty and wife Catherine Garton are believed to be the parents of William. Thomas was born ca 1683 in Essex Co., VA. He married Catherine Garton 6 March 1701 in Lancaster Co., VA. Thomas died ca 1748 in Orange Co., VA. Catherine Garton was born 1675-1680 in Rappannock Co., VA and died ca 1748 in Orange Co, VA. Her parents were John A. and Martha Garton.

Hubert Petty/Patey is believed to be the father of Thomas Petty. Hubert had two wives, Rebecca and Faith. We do not know which was Thomas' mother. Hubert immigrated to America in 1672. Hubert was born 30 Nov. 1645 in England. He died 2 June 1687 in Lancaster Co, VA.
