George Cornelius Winstead

(August 13, 1881 - February 6, 1948)

George Winstead's father died when George was very young. He came to Texas at an early age. He came to Coleman County about 1900. In the earlier years he farmed northeast of Coleman. Later, he moved to the Junction Community, three and a half miles east of town. He and his wife purchased land in this community in 1922 where they resided until him death in 1948. George was a leader in the community and respected as a Christian layman. He was active in the Junction Baptist Church which was located about one half mile east of his home. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, and had been a deacon about 46 years at his death. He particularly enjoyed the fellowship of young people in this large rural area. When the population became sparse and transportation was more adequate, the church disbanded, moving the building into Coleman for further use. The George C. WInstead family along with many others transferred their membership to the First Baptist Church in Coleman.
