Mary Newman

(Abt, 1654 - December 12, 1734)

Additional information from: Melanie McKinzie, 2003, with the following notes:

Margaret Brockenbrough was really Mary Newman who married William Brockenbrough and was then widowed. When Mary (Newman) Brockenbrough married John Dalton in Richmond Co. their date of marriage can be determined in the Court Order Books and was during the year 1701/2: 6 Feb1701/2 Court: Doctor Robert Clarke vs John Dalton and Mary his Wife, Admrx of Wm Brockenbrough. Action: Judgment granted the plaintiff for 600 lb tob: and court costs ....Order Book Abstracts of Richmond County Va 1699-1701,> Ruth and Sam Sparacio (McLean VA, 1991), p 90.

Melanie Dalton Crain@mindspring.com writes 1. John Dalton did not Marry Margaret--he married a Mary. 2. If Timothy Dalton Sr. were born Abt 1690, then it was impossible for John & Mary Brockenbrough Dalton to be his parents.. Mary was married to Wm Brockenbrough in 1690. having his children then. He Married the widdowed Mary Brockenbrough 1701/2.

And please remember that there is no marriage of a William Dalton and Margaret Brockenbrough. Some of the children listed above are found in the Abingdon Parish (Gloucester Co Va) records and are definitely listed there as the children of William and Margaret Dalton, not John and Mary. Sources: Will of Austin Brockenbrough, 20 Feb 1716, proved Richmond Co. VA 1 May 1717. Will of Mary Dalton, Richmond VA., 1733.

From: Suzmei@AOL.COM (Suzmei) My information shows that Mary Newman married William Brockenbrough (1650-1702). Their children were: Austin born 1685, William, Newman, Elizabeth and another daughter (your Margaret?). Mary Newman died Dec. 12, 1734 in North Farnham Parish, Va.

Mary Newman was the daughter of Thomas Newman (1656-1700 Richmond County, Va.) and Bridgett Wilson (d. 1704). She had a sister Ann who married Henry Austin and Thomas Dean.

Will of Mary Dalton, Richmond VA., 1733.

Contained transcriptions of Northumberland County Virginia Court Order Books from 1699-1713. In the earliest court book (1699) there were several notations about John Dalton in Northumberland County. Northumberland County was established in 1648 and was contiguous with Old Rappahannock County which was abolished when divided in 1692 into Richmond and Essex Co. A couple of the relevant court records were in regards to a suit whose plaintiff was James Rogers and whose defendant was Elizabeth Newman, Executrix of Walter Dun/Dunn's estate. The John Dalton who was a witness of Walter Dunn's Will was certainly the same John Dalton who, in 1702, married Mary (Newman) Brockenbrough, widow of William Brockenbrough.

Elizabeth Newman was the widow of Capt. Alexander Newman. In Richmond County records the following also included Elizabeth:

-1698/9 Mar 3 A Mrs. Elizabeth Newman was granted an attachment against the estate of Stephen GRUBTON. [John DALTON signed a contract for the Gubtons] Also: A fact finding period was granted to Mrs. Elizabeth Newman, Executrix of Capt. Alexander Newman, in her complaint against John ALLOWAY. Also: Fact finding period granted to Ann GLASCOCK in her suit against Mrs. Elizabeth Newman, Exrx of Capt. Alexr: Newman. Also: the action brought against Elizabeth Newman, Exrx, by Edward GEFFREY was dismissed because under oath the Plt. Mrs. Newman said the Legacy had already been paid.

-1699 June 8 Action of Ann GLASCOCK against Elizabeth Newman was dismissed, uncertainty in the declaration. Also: Elizabeth was awarded the suit against John ALLOWAY, award of 500 lb tobacco & costs, in a judgment made because he did not appear or give testimony. ---------------- Records of Mary Newman and her descendants are taken from research of Jon R. Matthews, 20 Atwood St., Newington CT 06111-2401, 1999, with his permission.

Additional information is from "Thomas Newman, 1620-1700," by Preston E. Newman, 1995.

Her will was probated in Richmond County in 1735, in which she identified her children by John Dalton.
