"Leander Greear was born July 21, 1865, and was killed in a grist mill accident October 17, 1875. Hamilton had taken Leander and a black playmate with him to the mill. The boys were left to their play while the corn was ground. Somehow - the details were too gruesome to be repeated - Leander was struck by moving machinery or otherwise fell to his death. Hamilton brought the crumpled body of their youngest child home to Phoebe. Their heartbreak still echoes in the chest of this aging and increasingly sentimental great grandson." (James D.
