Col. John T. Pickett

(October 9, 1823 - October 18, 1884)

"Col. John T. Pickett, of Washington, D. C., born Oct. 9, 1823; died Oct. 18, 1884; was educated at Transylvania University; in 1841 was appointed cadet to West Point, but resigned before finishing the course, to accept a Diplomatic appointment as U. S. Consul to the West Indies, and served until 1848, when he became associated with Lopez in the movement to free Cuba; after Battle of Cardenas, Col. Pickett had the distinction of having a $25,000 reward offered for his head by the Capt. Gen. of Cuba. From 1853 to 1861 he was U. S. Consul to Vera Cruz; in 1861 he was appointed Secretary of the American Peace Commission, and later served as Commissioner for the C. S. to Mexico; in 1862 he was Col. and Asst. Adjt. Gen., on the staff of Gen. John C. Breckenridge, C. S. A., and so served until the surrender; after the Civil War he located in Washington, D. C."
