Col. James Chamberlayne Pickett

(February 6, 1793 - July 10, 1872)

"James Chamberlayne Pickett was educated at West Point and served as a captain in the US Army, and in the War of 1812, he was an Officer of U. S. Artillery; he also served in the US Army, 1818 - 1821. He resigned and entered upon the practice of law in Mason County. He was a State Legislator in 1822; Secretary of State, 1825 - 1828; appointed by President Jackson Secretary of the U. S. Legation to Columbia, 1829 - 1833, and part of the time acting Charge d' Affairs; Commissioner of the U. S. Patent Office, 1835; fourth auditor of the U. Sl. Treasury, 1835 - 1838; Commissioned plenipotentiary to Ecuador, 1838; Charge d" Affaires to Peru, 1838 - 1845, when he retired to private life."
