(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: In COLONIAL FAMILIES OF THE SOUTHERN STATES OF AMERICA, 1911, Second Edition with Revisions and additions by the author, 1958, by Stella Pickett Hardy, page 428, it is given that James Sanford Pickett was the second son of George of Ida (Martin) Pickett, and that Capt. William Sanford Pickett was James Sanford Pickett's son. However, this page was not corrected in this second addition. Some researchers have shown that Capt. William Sanford Pickett was the illiegitimate son of William Pickett and Martha Sanford.)
"Capt. William Sanford Pickett of Fauquier County, Virginia, served as a Burgess and with distinctionin the Revolutionary War, as Captain in the 3rd Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col. Thomas Marshall; was High Sheriff of Fququier County, 1788 - 89. He was a liberal supporter of the Episcopal Church. His will is dated January 10, 1798 and the same was probated February 25, 1798. He married Elizabeth Metcalfe, 8 - 7 - 1756; second, Lucy Young, 6 - 4 - 1775; and third Martha Metcalf, 8 - 6 - 1780. I have found his Bible. In his will he named his wife Martha; his children were by his first marriage."
