Emory Dow "Buddy" Dulin

(May 10, 1856 - July 5, 1930)

"Emory Dow "Buddy" Dulin came with his parents and brothers and sisters to Eastland County. They settled four miles northwest of Eastland. Buddy said if he were 21, he would return to Marshall County, Alabama. He married Maggie Lewis on Easter Day, April 5, 1885, when he was 29 and Maggie was 16. Maggie who always had dark brown hair was furious when anyone thought Buddy, prematurely gray, was her father. They attended the Bedford Methodist Church and school. Buddy was a carpenter, building many of the early homes in Eastland, and helped clear the county road from Eastland to Cisco.

"Farm life had a garden, orchard, sugar cane, chickens, cattle and hogs to provide good food. There were trees to climb, places to explore, an organ to play, cotton to pick, horses (Charley and Dolly) to ride, dogs (Major and Mose), rocks to collect, tanks for swimming and fishing, trips by horse, hack, buggy or wagon. When relatives visited, men ate first, followed by older women, children, then those who served, baked bread and washed dishes. There were always children for many activities. Overnight guests had girls sleeping on pallets and boys in the cottonseed bin. Once children, thrilled with their Christmas stockings, hung them up the next night, but found them filled with sticks.

"The oil boom brought five good wells. Lifestyles changed. A Model T Ford provided a challenge to Buddy, as it did not stop when he pulled the steering wheel and yelled, "Whoa!" They moved to Eastland and were active in the First Methodist Church. Maggie was a charter member in the Pioneer Club. She still had a garden, and cooked big meals each day to be ready for relatives or friends who felt free to drop in unannounced. Her specialities were chicken and dumplings, vegetables cooked in a big iron pot, fruit cobbler and fried pies. Buddy liked teakettle tea which was hot water with sugar and cream. Maggie made quilts and knitted bedspreads or lace for pillowcases for her family. If one recieved a gift, all received one. Her visits to the ill made them forget the pain. She had the ability to make chores fun. Children loved to visit. Her porch swing travelogs were to charter a bus, pick up all the kin, on to Cisco for Frances and Bill's families. Then she told of their annual visits to Ben's in Amarillo and Hester's in Phoenix. She loved to tell of her early childhood in North Carolina where they had raspberries. She told how they planted tobacco by using the boot heel print to plant the seeds." (Edith Wood Grissom in the articles, "Dulin-Lewis" and "Dulin-Owen" in EASTLAND COUNTY HISTORY, 1989)

1900, 1910, 1020 Eastland County, Texas census.
