Maj John George Edmund Templer

(4 Dec 1855 - 16 Jan 1924)

Esquire, JP, Captain and Hon Major in the first Devon Imperial Yeomanry (late Captain Highland Light Infantry) Wife was daughter of Captain W.H.Hall, RN. Seat - Lindridge, Teignmouth, Devon.

He inherited Lindridge when his father died in 1883, and lived there until he sold it in 1920.

Lindridge was continuously owned by the Templer family for 142 years (1778-1920). By all accounts, it was very grand. Unfortunately, the house was destroyed by fire in 1963. After various legal problems, apartments were built on the site, some utilising part of the original remains. The grounds and formal gardens are still very extensive and laid out in much the same way as they would have been when the original house was standing. The son of James George John Templer, John George Edmund was educatedat Eton. He too followed an Army career, being in the Highland Light Infantry and an Honorary Major in the Imperial Yeomanry. He served in the Egyptian campaign in 1882 and retired in 1913,
He was also a J.P.
In 1891 he married Frances Hall the daughter of Captain W.H.Hall R.N.They had two daughters, Joan, born in 1895 and Doris born three yearslater in 1898. The latter married Carol Herbert Francis Samuelson, Baronet).
In 1920 John George Edmund sold Lindridge, which he had inherited from his father, to Lord Cable. And so the second big estate acquired byour branch at the height of their powers at the end of the 18th century passed into other hands. Stover had of course gone to the Duke of Somerset nearly a century before (in 1829).
He died at the Manor House, Paignton in 1924, aged 69

Ron Lewin - 1983

John George Edmund Templer was born on 4 December 1855, the first andeldest child of his parents.

We know little of his childhood at Lindridge, but he was educated at Eton and later joined the regular army, being commissioned as a lieutenant into the 74th Highlanders, which later became the Highland Light Infantry. His pursuit of a military career, may well have been prompted by his father's interest in military matters, as well as the fact that a number of his more distant cousins (other descendants of James Templer of Stover) had risen to prominent positions in the Indian Army.

Whilst serving with the HLI he spent some time on the North West Frontier of India, and was involved in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882.

At the time of his father's death in 1883, when he was 28 years of age, JGET had served for approximately 10 years in the army and he had risen to the rank of Captain - a reasonable rate of progress given the notoriously slow rate of promotion in the British Army at that time. However, he could not remain in the army and run the Lindridge estate,so on his father's death he resigned his commission and returned home.

However, the financial position was such that Lindridge was still letfrom time to time, and it was not until 15 September 1891, some eightyears after his father had died and at the age of 36 he married Frances Mary Hall, the daughter of Captain W H Hall, RN. With the arrival of his new wife, his mother and sisters Frances and Anne moved out of Lindridge House into Avenue Lodge, where his mother was to live until she died in 1913. Anne died of appendicitis at Avenue Lodge in 1908.

We know little of how JGET spent his time. He retained his interest in military matters by becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in the 1st Devons, and he was also a JP. He apparently became one of the first to usea motor car in the district, and he and his family continued to take an interest in local affairs. Several pieces of furniture in Ideford Church were given in memory of his brothers and sister, a carved oak prayer desk was presented in 1904 in memory of his younger brothers Alfred Mason Templer who died of TB in Grahamstown in South Africa, and Frederick Napier Templer who was a Captain in the Royal Marine Artillery and died of a fever in the West Indies, and an additional seat was given in memory of his sister Anne who died in 1908.

JGET had 2 children, both daughters, the eldest Joan being born at Lindridge in 1895, and her younger sister, Doris, being born also at Lindridge in 1899. However, there were problems with the marriage and in1912 JGET's wife left him taking her two daughters with her.

The causes of the break up are contentious and disputed, but the version circulated amongst his close relatives suggests that JGET's wife Frances held the then fashionable view held by some Victorian women that sex was an unwelcome necessity for the propagation of the race, butonce that had been achieved it should be curtailed as far as possible. Accordingly, having produced two daughters, Frances is alleged to have excluded sex from her life, and her husband, therefore decided tohave a clandestine relationship with one of the Lindridge maids.

All went well until one day Frances having departed in a carriage to go shopping, returned unexpectedly for some gloves which she had forgotten, only to find her husband in bed with the maid.

After his wife's departure, John stayed on in Lindridge for a while, but then decided to move out and let it. This decision was probably taken when his mother died in 1913. He set up home with the maid, in the Manor House, Paignton where he lived until his death at the age of 69 on 16 January 1924. The choice of Paignton may have been influenced by the fact that JGET had inherited the Lordship of the Manor of Paignton when he inherited Lindridge, and he retained this honorary title, and with it the right to appoint the Vicar, even after Lindridge had been sold.

The new Lindridge tenant was Sir Ernest Cable, later Lord Cable, who had retired from a successful career in India, and it was he who finally bought the property for £100,000 in 1920. On his death JGET left an estate valued at £87,807.
