Elizabeth Letitia Batchelor

(17 Aug 1865 - 14 Apr 1933)

"[Mrs Elizabeth Laetitia Widdicombe] decided to cut and run. Leaving her husband out there, she brought her three children home again on the Royal Mail (twin screw!) liner 'Lake Champlain' in May 1901; she never saw him again. Evie the eldest [child] was twelve years old. With bank assistance [she] acquired leaseholds in Pimlico and founded a ladies' residential club, the Warwick Club Ltd, which flourished strongly until long after her death. It was before the bedsit revolution and the days of flat sharing, and fulfilled an undoubted need in its day. Various members of the family made use of the club while passing through or staying in London. For a brief period it put [her] into the chauffeur and limousine bracket."
