Robert Shawe Templer

(30 Jan 1864 - 3 Sep 1930)

Educated at Charterhouse. Studied law in Dublin was to takeover from his father as Miss Cope’s agent at Longhall. His father died when he was 22, although qualified as a solicitor, Miss Cope said he was too young. Cousin George unsuccessfully making stockings at Ballbriggan, Dublin, took him to Ceylon, where in 1885 he became a creeper (trainee) on a tea estate up country.Coffee crop just totally failed due to insects, tea and rubber planting started. Became an estate manager. Played cricket and tennis for Upcountry versus Colombo. Rode and shot snipe. In 1900 rented Trenleur Lodge, County Mayo, with Ceylon friends George Alston, Haddow and Maitland.
Visited T’s rench cousins at Clonodtoy Castle,  Limerick and met Francis Ann Tucker. On return to Trenleur, banns were read out, friends were astonished as he was aged 34.
1896 Visiting agent and then partner to Cumberbatch and co - Colombo
circa 1897 toured FMS with Ceylon cricket team and founded Cumberbatch FMS.
