Zaccheus Goldsmith Sr.

(1662 - 30 Oct 1747)

Zacheus was the son of Richard Goldsmith and Mary (Perkins?). He was married about 1685 to Martha Hutton, the daughter of Richard Hutton and Elizabeth Kilham. Zacheus was a weaver. Children, b. Wenham:

* Martha, bapt. 14 Nov 1686, d. Wenham 1 March 1747/8, m. (int. Wenham 4 May 1712) Simon PATCH, b. 1685, d. Wenham 13 May 1749, aged 63, the son of Thomas Patch and Mary Scott. Five children are known, born 1715 to 1728.

* Elizabeth, b. 1688, d. Beverly, Mass. 8 July 1765, aged 77, m. (1) Beverly 23 June 1715 Francis QUARLES of Ipswich, b. say 1682, d. 1724. Their marriage was also recorded in Ipswich. Francis's will was proved in Ipswich 29 July 1724. Elizabeth m. (2) (intention in Beverly 14 march 1724/5) Robert HASKELL, b. Beverly 17 Feb 1692/3, buried there 9 April 1776, the son of William Haskell and Ruth West. Robert had married first in Manchester on 4 Dec 1712 Mary Leach, and with her had five children born 1713 to 1721. Robert's will, dated 3 March 1765, was probated 6 May 1776. Elizabeth had three known children with her first husband, born 1716 to 1721, two of whose baptisms were recorded in Ipswich. She had one known child with her second husband, Elizabeth, born in 1726. Elizabeth has a grave marker in the Abbott Street Burial Ground in Beverly, Mass.

* Hutton, b. c. 1690, d. 1751, m. (intention in Wenham 11 Dec 1714) Miriam KIMBALL, b. Wenham 20 Feb 1691[/2?], the daughter of Ephraim Kimball and Mary Friend. Many web sources give Hutton a baptismal year of 1690, one even giving the date of 18 May 1690, but I can find no such records. Therefore the birth year of 1690 is being given as an approximation. Hutton died intestate, and the probate of his estate was dated 11 July 1751. After their marriage, Hutton and Miriam lived in Wenham, where the baptisms of four children were recorded from 1715 to 1721, but about 1722 they moved to Marblehead, Mass. where the baptisms of six children were recorded at the Second Congregational Church from 1723 to 1735.

* John, b. 1694; d. Wenham 21 Nov 1695

* John, b. Wenham 17 Dec 1696

* Mary, b. Wenham 14 May 1699, perhaps died c. 1735, m. Wenham 30 Nov 1722 John WOODWARD, b. c. 1696, d. Brookline, Mass. 15 Feb 1770, aged 73. Mary and John had only three known children, and their births were recorded in Brookline, Mass. 1724/5 to 1730. It therefore makes sense that Mary died at an early age. One online account gives her death as April 1735, and another as Dec 1735, but I cannot confirm either. John appears to have continued living in Brookline, and likely remarried, with several possibilities in the Brookline records.

* Zacheus, b. Wenham 7 April 1701, living in 1783, m. (1) Wenham 14 Dec 1724 Tabitha DODGE, b. Wenham 12 July 1710, d. Wenham 8 Nov 1726 in her 17th year, daughter of William Dodge and Prudence Fairfield. They had a son, William, b. 1725. Zacheus m. (2) 15 May 1729 Mehitabel KIMBALL, b. Wenham 9 Oct 1707, d. Ipswich 15 Feb 1777, the daughter of Caleb Kimball and Sarah Safford. Zacheus lived at Wenham, Ipswich and Andover, Mass., and also briefly at Medford. He had one child with his first wife and seven more with the second, with all births recorded in Wenham. He likely moved to Ipswich after 1742 when his youngest child was born, but by 1745 when his oldest son was married there. In 1783 he resided in Ossipee, NH where his sons Isaac and John had settled. There is a confusing probate cover page that gives a probate date for Zacheus Goldsmith of 1756, but that cannot refer to this Zacheus. The death record of his second wife calls her the wife of Zacheus, not the widow. Furthermore, he and his second wife were subjects of a warning out in Medford in 1764. The first wife, Tabitha, is buried in the Dodge Row Cemetery in Beverly, Mass., and had a grave marker that was transcribed and published in the Essex Institute Collections. However, the marker appears to have since been lost to the elements. It appears that Zacheus, wife Mehitabel, and son Isaac went to Medford, Mass. to live, coming from Ipswich, but were warned out of Medford. In Medford's book of Warnings Out is written the following: "Also Zaccheus Goldsmith & Mehetabel his wife Isaac their son & a lad Nam'd Benjam. Pursel which persons came from Ipswich to Medford April: 24th. 1764".

* Richard, b. Wenham 28 Dec 1705, (bapt 16 Dec ??), d. Littleton, Mass. 26 Jan 1756, and m. Wenham 23 June 1731 Hannah DODGE, b. 1705, d. Littleton 1 July 1760, aged 55. A Hannah Dodge was baptized on 3 June 1705 at the Wenham Congregational Church, but the record does not give names of parents, or even if this was a child or adult. Hannah, by one account, was a daughter of a Nehemiah Dodge (but I don't find such a person who could be her father, but could be her brother), by another account was a daughter of Antipas Dodge, and by yet other accounts was the daughter of Josiah Dodge and Sarah Fiske. The family structure suggests that the last choice is the best supported; also, Richard and Hannah named a son Josiah, which name does not appear to come from the Goldsmith family. Richard and Hannah have grave markers in the Littleton Old Burying Ground.
