Dr. Cyrus A. Baldwin

(7 Dec 1822 - Dec 1909)

According to Green Family Genealogy, Cyrus married Lois Whitcomb.
NOTE: There was another Cyrus Baldwin in Michigan, and some facts may be confused with the other one.
"Dr. Cyrus Baldwin, Section 36, Douglas P. O., was born in Rutland, Vt., in 1820, and removed to Genesee County, N. Y., with his people, where he was reared and educated. Dr. Baldwin began the practice of his profession very early in life. Successfully followed it in the East till 1866, when he came here and located, and has very ably carried it on since. Since locating in this State he took up the agricultural and stock industry, with which he has been very actively identified. In 1854 he married Miss Lois Whitcomb in Michigan. She was born in New York State, and reared in Michigan, Eaton County."

In the 1850 census for Onondaga, Ingham Co., New York, Aaron Baldwin is a farmer, age 29 from New York. Wife Mary is 25 and daughter Julia is 4, born in Michigan. [His brother] Cyrus is 26, a farmer from New York.
In the 1860 census for Onondaga, Ingham Co., Michigan, Cyrus is a farmer, age 37 from Vermont, with $2000 real estate and $700 personal. His wife Lois is 25 from New York, and James [probably his nephew, son of Thomas P. Baldwin] is 22 from New York with $150.
In the 1870 census for Chicago precinct, Douglas Co., Nebraska, Cyrus Baldwin is a physician, age 48 from Vermont, with $1,000. His wife Lois is (35?) from New York.
In the 1880 census for Elkhorn, Douglas Co., Nebraska, Cyrus is a farmer, age 59 from Vermont (parents England?). Wife Lois is 42, from New York (parents Vermont). [The parents for the two may be transposed.] They have John Nusser, farm laborer, age 12 from Minnesota (parents Germany) and Andrew Patrick, farmer, age 42 from England, living with them.
Dr. Cyrus 'Baidwin' is listed in 1885 as a farmer in Douglas Co. from the "Official Atlas of Nebraska, 1885".
In the 1900 census for Arlington, Washington Co., Nebraska, Cyrus Baldwin is 80, born Dec 1819 in Vermont (father Vermont, mother Massachusetts). His wife Lois is 66, born New York (father Vermont, mother New York) with 0 of 0 children living. Nellie is 'a-daughter' [adopted?], age 16, born Mar 1884 in Virginia (parents Virginia).

"Cyrus Baldwin, one of Onondaga's oldest pioneer citizens is dead, aged 91 years old. He came to Michigan more than 70 years ago, and for half a century was one of the most prominent stock buyers in this section of the state. He was a brother of Grove Baldwin, another one of Onondaga's pioneer residents."

NOTE: There was another Cyrus Baldwin in Michigan. "When Genesee county was still partly covered with forests, and the villages were tiny hamlets, came the first doctor, Cyrus Baldwin, who removed from Onondaga County, New York, and came to Grand Blanc in the spring of 1833. He was a deacon in the Presbyterian Church in that locality. In 1837 he went to Atlas, was the pioneer physician in that township and practiced there for a number of years."

3 July 2020 Stacey Baldwin Fitting wrote to Rex Wilson:
Hi, Terry. Thanks for contacting me. I am a descendant, through my father, of Grove Baldwin, brother to Dr. Cyrus Baldwin. My father had been told that our family was related to Lucky Baldwin, which is why I researched Elias J Baldwin, aka 'Lucky'.
Unfortunately, it seems to be a case of wishful thinking, as is often the case in family lore concerning famous people with similar names. I found no common relatives before 1772, at least 6 generations back. Of course, Cyrus may have thought there was a connection. Elias J. Baldwin was a very colorful and very public figure!
You can look at the info on Lucky -- he is Elias Jackson Baldwin, LCTW-S2T. I've added some more information, both attaching records, and newspaper articles (under Collaborate - Notes) recently, as some overly ambitious researcher had made a few mistakes in adding family members.
I do a lot of research, both on my lines, those of my husband, family members and friends. I also tackle local history connections, and try to untangle confused family lines when I run across them. Whatever I look at, I try to attach as many primary sources and records as possible, in order to corroborate the information.
If I can help in any way, please let me know.
Thank you,
Stacey Baldwin Fitting
