Hannah Keyes

(Abt 1774 - )

HANNAH KEYES PARENTS HAVE NOT YET BEEN PROVED. However, the preparer of this information believes Hannah is probably the daughter of Ephraim and Abigail Keyes, and with even more certainty the granddaughter of Ephraim KEYES and Sarah WADKINS of Ashford, Connecticut. The similarity of names, the repeated use of name Ephraim in succeeding generations, location in Ashford, CT, etc. makes it a strong possibility that Hannah belongs to the family of Ephraim Keyes and Abigail Chaffee. Why all children of Ephraim Keyes, Jr. and Abigail Chaffee would not be listed if there were children other than Zilpha, Miriam, and Marashal/Marshall is unknown, but this is not uncommon in family records of those times. The marriage of Hannah Keyes to Levi Carpenter is listed in the Barbour records of Connecticut, though without the year. In my database I have tentatively linked Hannah to the Ephraim Keyes--Abigail Chaffee family with the notation of "possible parents" so that myself and others may be prompted to search further and make further attempts to verify her parentage.
Ephraim Keyes and Sarah Wadkins had sons William, Jonah and Frederick in addition to Ephraim, and I suppose they could be possible parents for Hannah as well, but after careful consideration of all possible family placements, my tentative placement seems most likely. To strengthen my tentative conclusion is the fact she named her first son Ephraim Keyes Carpenter. If Hannah is not the daughter of one of the sons, one might speculate that she was an illegitimate daughter of one of the daughters of Ephraim Keyes and Sarah Wadkins, but since she had a brother in Ephraim Keyes born 1770 (called uncle by her son Ephraim Keyes Carpenter) who also ended up in Lorain County, Ohio, it seems unlikely this would be the explanation.

HOWEVER, Hanna has also been named as a daughter of James Wallace, b. abt 1730 in Maghera, Northern Ireland [Find A Grave Memorial# 64560751], and Mary McClellan, b. abt 1734 in Londonderry. This couple were married 8 Apr. 1756 in Pelham, Massachusetts. The notes in Find A Grave Memorial# 64560751 indicate that their daughter Hannah Wallis married a Mr. Glass. This would match her with Hannah Wallace [L41B-8V1].
More recently, the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Vital Records for Andover, Ashford, and Avon pub. 1994. p. 58, proves that Hannah Wallace is incorrect as listed for this family.

Hannah Keyes lived in Tyringham, Berkshire, MA in the early 1800s before moving to Lorain Co. Ohio.
