Levi Carpenter

(1772 - 1830)

According to FamilySearch Family Tree, Levi Carpenter was fourth cousin once removed to Hannah Keyes. Their common ancestors were Hannah’s third great- and Levi’s fourth great-grandparents William Carpenter and Abigail Briant, and also Hannah’s fourth great- and Levi’s third great-grandparents Thomas Ruggles and Mary Curtis. However, the generations linking Levi and Hannah to these people may not all be certain. Specifically, Levi's mother may not have been born a Ruggles.

Residence: If Ephraim was born in 1798, he must have lived in Ashford until that time. When did he move to Tyringham, Berkshire County, Massachusetts?
Levi Carpenter and family must have gone to Tyringham about 1810. Daughter Sally died there in April 19, 1810.
There was a Levi Carpenter who was a defendant on Madison, NY County Court in 1813. Since Levi's brother Ruggles lived in Madison County, it is possible that Levi could have been there at some point in time. Ruggles' son Delford Carpenter, who died in 1843 at age 44, is buried in DeRuyter, Madison, NY.

Dr. Joel CARPENTER who died 1789 and Hannan RUGGLES, who died 1799, went to Ellington, CT about 1765 where he practiced medicine. They died and are buried in Ellington. (post from Margaret Scheffler: mscheffl@twcny.rr.com or mscheffler@verizon.net)
Barbour volume lists marriage date as Jan 13, 17[ ] and references vol. 4 p. 7 of Ashford vital records. Looking at the original record book in the Connecticut State Library in Hartford does not lend any further information or clues. The family of the younger Ephraim Keyes (1770-1852) left a small town in MA (likely Tyringham, Berkshire, MA) around the time of the War of 1812 and arrived in Avon, Lorain, OH about 1815. It is assumed that Levi and Hannah Keyes Carpenter and family were part of a group of families that went West together, probably including her brother Ephraim. I have assumed that Ephraim Keyes (1770-1852) and Hannah Keyes were siblings. No records have been found of the deaths of Hannah (Keyes) and Levi Carpenter and burial, but in the 1830 Federal census there are two people -- a male and female each between 50 and 60 years of age living in one household in Avon, Lorain, Ohio.
