Individual Details
Hymenus Eldeana Wilson
(16 Mar 1852 - 3 Mar 1910)
Hymenus and Ella were first cousins. When they were married they migrated to Chase County in western Nebraska along the Colorado border. There they obtained a "Preemtion" on a parcel of land where they built a sod house by digging a pit in the ground, using the sod to make bricks, which were then used to erect walls above the pit. The entire area was roofed over, a fireplace was included for cooking purposes and this was their first home. The picture of it has disappeared.
Hymenus was employed to teach the only school in the area and was paid the sum of $25 per month for this full time job. There was another amazing fact. When they left to move to Chase County they had the magnificent sum of $2000, half of which they put in a bank in Iowa. This was a lot of money in these days.
After some six years, their only child, Ivan Rex Wilson was born in this house. Before Rex was old enough to attend school they all moved to Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
