John B. A. "Jack" Evans

(14 Jul 1829 - 21 Feb 1895)

John B.A. (Jack) Evans, born July 14, 1829 in Newton County, Georgia, married around 1850 in Alabama to Manerva Lanham, a cousin to Cynthia and Jailie Ann Lanham, who married two of Jack's brothers, Josiah Washington and James Rufus, respectively. He did not move to Texas when his parents and brothers and sisters did, but in 1851, his first child was born in Smith County, Texas. After 1870, his second son, Billy was struck by lightning while herding cattle on the open range, and buried where he fell.
In 1859, Jack owned land in Jack County, Texas but did not stay there very long.
On June 29,1864, he married his second wife, Serepta Jane Ham in Palo Pinto County, so his first wife had died by this time. Manerva died of scurvy in March, 1864. Family tradition says that she came with her parents from Scotland Her parents died on the boat and she was reared by an uncle. Manerva was the mother of his first four children, John Lanham (sometimes seems to be referrred to as Joseph Lee), William F., Susan Minerva, and August Ann. Serepta Jane Ham was the mother of his next children, Serepta Alice, Samuel P.L., Lula, David and Durell. Serepta Jane died in childbirth along with her son, Durell, and they are buried together in the Willow Spring Cemetery in Parker County. His third wife was Emiline Mealey Stone. They had no children together but she raised his children from his previous marriages.
In 1882, Jack Evans ran for commisioner of Precinct 1 in Parker County, but was defeated. He is buried in the Cole/Markham cemetery where his father, William George Evans, Senior, is buried.
