Individual Details
Rachel Fletcher
(1752 - 18 Feb 1830)
Rachel’s maiden name Fletcher is probably a guess based on her having a son named John William Fletcher Stokes. However, FamilySearch Family Tree includes no such son.
FamilySearch Family Tree indicates that Rachel's surname was Thompson, but with no sources, discussions, or notes.
Rachel Fletcher is apparently identified as the wife of John Stokes in DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) records, which I have not seen in full. They were married in 1775 according to DAR records, though the date is presumably an estimate as it is not specific.
John Stokes, was a patriot of the American Revolution.
He is DAR Ancestor# A201669 with the following information:
Service: SOUTH CAROLINA
Rank: PATRIOTIC SERVICE
Birth: CIRCA 1754 NINETY SIX DIST SOUTH CAROLINA
Death: ANTE 6-28-1830 UNION DIST SOUTH CAROLINA
Service Source: SALLEY & WATES, STUB ENTRIES TO INDENTS BOOK L, P 34, #200
Service Description: 1) FURNISHED SUPPLIES
Residence 1) District: NINETY SIX DIST - State: SOUTH CAROLINA
John Stokes is listed in the US Census of 1790 and 1800. In those days the only name recorded was that of the head of the family, so his wife and children are not named in the census.
I have noticed that ThruLines shows that at least 42 descendants of Rachel share DNA with me, but only 2 descendants of John Stokes are my DNA matches, so I must reconsider the question of which ancestors are confirmed and which are not. ThruLines calculates suggested relationships based upon family trees submitted by genealogists. DNA matches prove that people share common ancestors, but they do not prove that the trees correctly identify who the common ancestors were.
