Edward Sales

(4 Sep 1609 - 10 Jun 1692)

Baptized Chesham, Buckinghamshire, 24 December 1609, son of Edward Sale. Came from Chesham, Buckinghamshire, to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "Elizabeth & Ann" (On 27 April 1635, "Edward Sall," aged 24, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Elizabeth & Ann). First settled in Marblehead; moved to Hingham in 1637, Weymouth by 1640, Rehoboth in 1643, & then back to Weymouth. Died before 6 October 1692 (date of inventory).
MARRIAGES: (1) By 1637 Margaret _____. (On 6 June 1637, "John Hathaway being accused of adultery with Margaret Seale, wife of Edward Seale, James Penn & Samuell Coles testified that he confessed it to them; so the grand jury found the bill of indictment to be true. Robrt Allen & Margaret Seale, being accused of adultery, confessed the fact; so the grand jury found the bill of indictment to be true." On 19 September 1637, "Margaret Seale, the wife of [blank] Seale, confessed adultery, & was found guilty." On 12 March 1637/8, it is "ordered, that the 3 adulterers, John Hathaway, Rob[e]rt Allen, & Margaret Seale, shall be severly whipped, & banished, never to return again, upon pain of death." On 30 March 1638, "Edward Seale of Marblehead [was bound in] twenty pounds for his wife's appearance when she shall be called for after her delivery.")
(2) By an unknown date Rebecca _____. The "wife of Edward Sails" died at Rehoboth on 13 July 1664. (On 14 July 1664, at Rehoboth, a coroner's jury ruled that "Rebeckah Sale, the late wife of Edward Sale, was her own executioner, viz: she hanged herself in her own hired house."
On 6 June 1637, "Edward Seale, for his beastly drunkenness, was censured to be set in the bilboes till the end of the Court, & then to be severely whipped." (This was the same court at which Edward's wife was convicted of adultery.)

Note: Daniel Preston, son of William Preston, sailed to New England with his uncle Edward Sale. Margaret Sale, first wife of Edward Sale, was accused of adultery with John Hathaway 6 Jun 1637. On 19 Sep 1637 she confessed adultery and was found guilty. She apparently committed adultery with Richard Allen as well and on 12 March 1637/8 it was ordered that the three adulterers shall be severly whipped, and banished, never to return again upon pain of death. On 30 March 1638 "Edward Seale of Marblehead was bound in twenty pounds for his wife's appearance when she shall be called for after her delivery." If Margaret Sale was banished from Marblehead, Massachusetts for adultery with John Hathaway and Robert Allen, one might guess that Edward Sale's second wife Rebecca was likely the mother of all the children except perhaps Ephraim with whom she would have been pregnant March 1638. Robert Charles Anderson refrained from attempting to distribute the children between the two proposed wives Margaret and Rebecca. I divided the children to call attention to the two wives.
