Individual Details

Arthur Humphrey Jr.

(6 Sep 1664 - 30 Jan 1752)

Husband of Rachel Rice (Humphery) buried next to him. Although their tombstones show the name spelled as Humphery, local histories and successive generations have spelled the surname "Humphrey" (it is believed Arthur was illiterate and was a strong opponent of public schools!). Arthur moved from Roxbury, MA to Woodstock, MA (now CT), then to Ashford, MA and is well documented in local histories. Some of his descendants (Ebenezer) settled in Oxford, MA - successive generations through his line all named Arthur Humphrey through about 8 generations settled in Goshen, NH - then Corinth, VT, and later were the first settlers in the town of Holland, Erie Co. NY in 1809. Others settled near Patriot, Switzerland Co., IN.
