Nathaniel Thwing J. P.

(25 Jun 1731 - 6 Apr 1817)

The extensive territory in Maine seems to indicate he was a minor member of the Kennebeck Proprietors. --------------------------------------------------- "Nathaniel Thwing was born June 25, 1731, in Boston, went to Kennebec during 1756 and remained there alone the entire winter seeing no human being from the next day after Thanksgiving to the following spring. In 1763 he brought his family from Boston, he having acquired several thousand acres of land along the Kennebec, one hundred acres of which around Thwing's Point remain in the Thwing family. Benedict Arnold's expedition halted at Thwing's Point, some members calling at Thwing's house. He was one of the first overseers of Bowdoin College, was appointed by Governor John Hancock one of the Justices of Inferior Court of Common Pleas in County of Lincoln, October 6, 1781, and also justice of the peace by him for seven years; was county treasurer in 1792." ----------------------------------------------------
deed from Nathaniel to son John offered for sale Jan 2006 on eBay: "for the natural love & affection which I bear to my son John Greenough THWING of Woolwich, Yeoman,...a tract of land in Dresden about eighty four acres being part of a lott of land granted to Nathl THWING late of Boston in the County of Suffolk Esq deceased by the Proprietors of the Kennebec Purchase, bounded in part by John PERKIN s land; east on the line dividing the Towns of Woolwich & Dresden..to the river Kennebec. Signed by Nathl (Nathaniel) THWING and witness signatures of Seth NATHOM and Josuha CORNISH. Reverse signed by JP Eben CLAP. There is a piece of archival tape across the middle fold on the back. With this is a super plot or survey map with a wonderful compass, completely handrawn. The map portion mentions Col. Edward HUTCHINSON ; Merrymeeting Bay ; Benja JOHNSON ; Jona REED and Nathaniel THWING. An outstanding MAP. It says "Recd this plot of Capt Benjan JOHNSON Nov 4 1757 Natl THWING. " My opinion on the map is that it was handrawn for the 1812 deed. Mainly because the paper on which it is drawn is not 18thC paper." --------------------------------- record of marriages by Nathaniel Thwing: NEHGR 37:53-55 (Jan 1883)
