Nathaniel Thwing

(17 Aug 1703 - 18 Apr 1768)

The extensive territory in Maine seems to indicate he was a minor member of the Kennebeck Proprietors. ---------------------------------------------- "Nathaniel, born in 1703, became a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1736; was commissioned a lieutenant in Boston in 1743, of which Hon. Jacob Wendell was colonel. He served as major and captain of the Third company of the Eighth Massachusetts Regiment under Colonel John Choate, against Louisburg, and was on February 18, 1755, commissioned a lieutenant-colonel of a Regiment of Foot whereof Richard Gridley, Esquire, was colonel, being a part of the forces raised to protect His Majesty's territories from further encroachments of the French at Crown Point. In 1752 he went to Frankfort on Kennebec to open the county for settlement for the Plymouth Company who owned the land. He died April 18, 1768, and was buried in King's Chapel burying ground." He rejoined the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1761, while a major of militia. On March 12, 1764, he was chosen (with others) one of the Selectmen of Boston. He resigned his office Nov. 17, 1765. He was a gentleman well respected. He was seized with an apoplectic fit in the street as he was returning home from public worship on Sunday, April 17, 1768, and died the next day. His wife died Sept. 6, 1749, and he married, second, Martha Clap of Woburn, widow of Rev. Supply Clap, Jan. 1750.
