Sidney Albert Michie
(1 Mar 1880 - 3 Mar 1931)
Funeral rites for the late Sid F. Michie were held Wednesday afternoon at his home at Micola, the service being conducted by the Rev. D.K. Foster of this city in the presence of a large number of the friends of the deceased who had gathered for the purpose of paying that last tribute of respect to the departed which all knew him felt for him during his life. A large number of people from Caruthersville attended and among the gathering were friends from almost every community in the county, as well as from other cities and towns nearby.
Mr. Michie had spent a long and useful life in that community conducting large farming operations and a mercantile business during many years of his residence there, being in fact, the orginal founder of the settlement which afterward was named partly for him. In early days, while that portion of the county was yet a wilderness, it is related that he and his brother, Walter, in partnership with the late H.P. Coleman, established the first mercantile business in that section. The settlement first was known as Pocono, but later was changed to Micola, being a combination of the names Michie and Coleman.
Pallbearers at the funeral were selected from among a large number of friends and associates in this city and nearer the home community of the deceased as follows: J.W. Davis, Parker Nichols, D.E. Nichols, Fred Franklin, Lee Jennings and John Holdman. The body was laid to rest later in the afternoon in the family plot in Maple cemetery near this city.
Mr. Michie who suffered a long and painful illness before death finally claimed him, will be greatly missed in the community and his name will long be remembered with the respect due to a good citizen who gave of his best and most honest endeavors to be of service to family, friends and the people among whom his lot was cast and whom he loved.
