Raymond Denney, 92 year old Woodward resident, died Tuesday, January 19, 2010 in the V A Center in Clinton. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 25, 2010 at the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Charlie Graves officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery.
William Raymond Denney was born on January 26, 1917 in County Line, Oklahoma to Charles Edward and Amanda (Allgood) Denney. He was reared in County Line and attended Cool Branch Country School and graduated from Alma High School in 1934. During his time at Alma he played football and baseball. Raymond attended the Anadarko Business College. He was united in marriage to Dorthy Lee Pierce on September 24, 1937 in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was inducted into the United States Navy on March 18, 1944. He served his country as a Stenographer and Office Clerk until being honorably discharged on September 21, 1945.
They made their first home in County Line and have lived in several different towns including, Gainesville, Texas, Ardmore, Littlefield, Texas, Duncan, Sulphur, and Cyril before moving to Woodward to be near family. Raymond worked as a Farmer, a Bookkeeper, managed a Cotton Gin and taught at the Ardmore Business College and the Gainesville Business College.
He was a member of the Good Sam Club and the American Legion. Raymond enjoyed fishing, sports, traveling in his R.V., sharing meals with family and friends and camping. He was a Square Dance Caller and a great Handyman. Most of all he loved being with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Dorthy Denney of the home; two daughters, Pat Reese of Woodward, Marion Hopkins and husband Denny of Woodward; one son Roger Denney of Comanche; eight grandchildren, Theron Kinney, Marlin Kinney and wife Kim, Tracy Favorite and husband Verlyn, Shannon Dills and husband Nathan, Wendy Evans and husband Chris, Amanda Owen and husband Jeff, Ginger Bledsaw, Robert Denney and wife Crystal; two brothers Hayes Denney of Yukon, Kenneth Denney and wife Georgia of Longview, Texas; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Fern Deaton, Faye Castner, two brothers, Ray Denney, Hershal Denney and an infant brother Charles Denney.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Benevolent Fund with the Billings Funeral Home, 1621 Downs Avenue, Woodward, OK. 73801 accepting the contributions.
