William Franklin "Bud" Allen
(6 Mar 1942 - 8 Oct 2006)
Cremated, Ashes given to family or friend.
Specifically: Some of the ashes scattered by wife over parts of Texas
"Bud" at the age of 64, died at home on Sunday, Oct 8th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Luling TX to the late Virgil & Betty (Hughes) Allen. He served briefly in the Texas Army National Guard before serving on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1963. He was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba & later Quonset Point Naval Air Station, Rhode Island. While stationed in Cuba, he became pen pals with Alice L Foster of Norwalk and the two married on Aug 3 1963 in this city.
He spent 3 yrs as a Police Officer in Greenwich before moving back to his home state of Texas. Later, returning to Norwalk, he became a member of the Norwalk Police Dept. in 1966 & served for 21 yrs on the force. He retired with the rand of Lieutenant. During his time with the NPD, he served as Patrolman, Detective & later as Headquarters Commander. he was also responsible for overseeing the establishment & integration of Norwalk's firs 9-1-1 & computer-aided dispatch systems.
After retiring in 1987, he was hired by the West Avenue Parking Lot in Darien, where he worked until December as what he referred to as "Vehicle Placement Specialist". During those 18 yrs he helped many a commuter's day with a smile & warm greeting. After leaving the Police Dept. he turned to the hobby of wood-turning, and was active in local art festivals & craft shows, including Norwalk's Oyster Festival & the SoNo Arts Festival. However, his first love was spending time with his wife, children & grandchildren and traveling extensively throughout the country. The culmination of his travels came shortly before being diagnosed with cancer, when he & his wife drove nearly 15,000 miles to Alaska & back by way of Texas. In all, he and his wife Alice traveled together to every state in the nation, and with the exception of Hawaii, all were reached by automobile.
He is survived by his wife , Alice, his sons Matthew (mary Kate Clune) of Norwalk & William (Tammy Usher) of Bethel; three grandchildren, Ashley Eleanor Allen, William F Allen, II & Maximillian E Allen; two sisters Mary Jo (Allen / Barton) Greenough of Round Rock TX and Betty Joy (Allen) Benier & Kenneth of Anniston AL. He is further survived by nieces, nephews & many other relatives & family who loved him dearly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jack R Nixon & Mildred Nixon of Freer TX.
Bud experienced a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Despite difficult days of physical infirmity, he displayed steadfast and unwavering faith in God. This spoke volumes to the spiritual character of this man. Today he lives in the presence of the Lord he loved & served.
Commendation mus be made to those who have attended him over the past few months, in particular his family, & specifically his beloved wife, Alice. How he loved & praised them for their loving care to him. Also those of connecticut Hospice & the Whittingham Cancer Center.
