Howard Nicholas Jefferson August 12, 2005 COLUMBUS, GA�?Howard Nicholas Jefferson, 94, of Columbus, GA died Friday, August 12, 2005 at his home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 15, 2005 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Macon Road. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Porter Sunday School Class. Mr. Jefferson was born in Girard, AL to the late Nicholas and Elizabeth Henderson Jefferson. He spent most of his life in Columbus. He attended Columbus High School and the University of Alabama. Mr. Jefferson served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 until 1946. He and his brother Jack Jefferson founded the Jefferson Company in 1939. He was active in the real estate, mortgage, and insurance business for over 65 years. Mr. Jefferson was a life long member of First Baptist Church in Columbus where he served on the finance committee and President of the men's Bible class. He served as president of the Columbus Board of Realtors, President of the Columbus Executives Club, President of the Chattahoochee Valley Chapter of the University of Alabama Alumni Association, and served as a Director of the YMCA and a Director of the Columbus Kiwanis Club, a member of the Columbus-Phenix City-Ft. Benning Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army. He was a Scottish Rite Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the committee of 100, an organization of citizens affiliated with the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and its Industrial Development Corporation. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Jefferson, Jack Jefferson, and Joe Jefferson. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Toy McGehee Jefferson; a son Joseph Nicholas Jefferson, a son Howard McGehee Jefferson and his wife Laura Newman Jefferson, two grandsons Nicholas Newman Jefferson and Nolan McGehee Jefferson.
