George Wesley Gushwa

Mr. George Gushwa, 90, of Elida, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
He was born on Feb. 28, 1914, in Dayton, to Della and Bob Gushwa. He grew up in Dayton and attended school in Artesia until his senior year. In 1930 the family moved to Elida where he graduated from Elida High School in 1931. In 1942 he went in the Army and served during World War II. Following the war he returned to Elida to ranch. Family member said he liked horses and was very fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Faye Rowland.
Survivors include his wife, Zane; two step-sons, Craig Chapman of Clovis and Paul Chapman of Utica, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Charlene Walker, and Wesley, Katey, Jessica and Cacey Chapman; four great-grandchildren, Kagen and Kane Walker, and Gabriel and Demi Thompson; a brother, Charlie Gushwa of Lubbock; a sister, Ruth Fenton of Clovis; and nine nieces and nephews.
The Rev. James Fogg and John Brumfield will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.
Pallbearers are Thurston Evans, Monte Mapp, Rick Brumfield, Jack Manis, Billy Carter and John Brumfield.
Honorary pallbearers are Johnny Morgan, Dr. Donaldson and Dr. Alexander.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
