GREER WOMAN IS FATALLY INJURED
MRS. LETHA BURGESS KILLED IN AUTO COLLISION NEAR HARRISON'S STORE
GREER, May 31 - Mrs. Letha Howard Burgess, 40, of 22 Holly Street, Greer Mill, was fatally injured in an automobile collision on the Woodruff Highway about midnight between Greer and Woodruff tonight about 7:45 o'clock.
Mrs. Burgess was riding in a Studebaker Coupe with her son, Jerry Bob Burgess, 18, who was
driving.
Mrs. Burgess was traveling toward Greer. The other car was headed toward Woodruff and a head on smash was narrowly averted.
The collision was between the Burgess car and a Mercury Coupe driven by John D. Christopher, 16, Route 1, Greer, according to State Highway Patrolman Townsend, who investigated, and Sheriff B.B. Brockman of Spartanburg County. Christopher was alone.
The crash occured near Harrison's store. Mrs. Burgess was dead on arrival at Spartanburg General Hospital. Mrs. Burgess was thrown out of the car. No one else was hurt.
Christopher was being detained by Spartanburg Officers, Sheriff Brockman said.
Mrs. Burgess was a daughter of the late Chadwick and Bertha Babb Howard.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Viola Teasley of Spartanburg; and one son, Jerry Bob Burgess of Greer; two brothers, Lawrence of Route 2, Greer, and Alton Howard of Greer; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Paris of Glendale and Mrs. Marie Grant of Greer; two grandchildren, and one half-brother, Boyce Howard of Route 2, Greer.
Mrs. Burgess was a member of the El Bethel Baptist Church. Coroner George Adams of Spartanburg County will hold an inquest.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Wood Mortuary in Greer.
