Whatcom County resident, Marian "Toots" Vavra age 86, died in Lynden on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Lynden Manor.
Daughter of Harvey and Florence (Connor) Pike, she was born June 14, 1927 in Everson where she grew-up and was a 1945 graduate of Nooksack Valley High School.
On Sept. 24, 1949, Toots married Jerome J. Vavra in Reno, Nevada.
Her ambitious and positive attitude was an inspiration to others. Outside the home, Toots worked at Kales Cannery, various community businesses and retail sales; which included owning and operating The Family Affair Department Store in Everson with niece Lin Johnson.
Her hobbies included flower gardening, making flower arrangements and reading. A people person, Toots loved times together with family and friends for potlucks; was always up for a good argument; enjoyed the casino; going for car rides and especially delighted in visits with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Most of her life was lived on the South Pass Road where she "loved" the picturesque view of the mountain from her home. Toots would frequently say, "I had a good life, didn't I?"
Preceded in death by her husband, Jerome, in 2005; grandsons, Vince Anderson and Brian Vavra; and four brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, November 27, 10:30 am at Nooksack Cemetery with a reception following at Nooksack Christian Fellowship Hall, Jackson and 1st St. in Nooksack.
The family suggests memorials to: Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 2901 Squalicum Pkwy, Bellingham, WA 98225 or American SIDS Institute, 528 Raven Way, Naples, FL 34110.
