Dan Etter Doehring

(24 Jul 1946 - 3 Jun 2007)

DAN ETTER DOEHRING, 60, passed away on Sunday surrounded by his family after a 3-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on June 24th, 1946, in Houston, Texas. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 38 years, Eileen Whiteside Doehring, daughter Danielle Eileen Sellier and her husband Richard Thomas Sellier, sons David Robert Doehring and Douglas Jamison Doehring, granddaughter Kaylie Eileen Sellier, brother Richard Lee Doehring, sister Ann Krenek, sisters-in-law Penny McDill Doehring, Sally Walston Doehring, and Kitty Whiteside, a number of nieces and nephews, and the Harris County Sheriff's Department family. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Sweeney Jamison Doehring, Jr. Dan graduated from Memorial Senior High School in 1965. He then participated in the Army ROTC program at Trinity University, where he would meet the love of his life. He convinced Eileen to marry him in a way only he could have managed, and after they graduated from Trinity they moved on to Fort Eustis, Virginia, where Dan was a 1st Lieutenant in charge of a boat company. In 1972, Dan and Eileen returned to Houston where Dan joined the Harris County Sheriff's Department Reserves. It was during his time with the Reserves that Dan found his true calling as a peace officer, and it was soon after his retirement that he returned to the Reserves. It was also during this time that he took up one of his many passions, hot air ballooning. His aptly named balloon, Almost, almost arrived in time for the Bicentennial. With the birth of his first child in 1974, caring for his family became Dan's first passion; he was the definition of a family man. In addition to being a devoted father and husband, Dan was a retired Captain, a 32-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Department, where he served in the patrol, courts, and jail divisions, among others. A Houston native, Dan's service to his community was based on his love for his hometown and his deeply set roots in the area. Dan retired in January of 2006 and took his entire family on a cruise to Alaska to celebrate. The untimely passing of this incredibly loving and gregarious man with a heart of gold weighs heavily on our hearts eased only by the memories of the precious time spent with him. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, June 6, from 5 until 9 PM at the Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Avenue. The funeral service will be at 1 PM on Thursday, June 7th, at the same location with Father Ron Cloutier officiating. Pallbearers will be David Doehring, Richard Sellier, Doug Doehring, Danielle Sellier, Brian Doehring, Ann Krenek, Richard Doehring, Cindy Kellum, Lee Doehring, J Doehring, Chris Doehring. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deputies of both the Harris County Sheriff's Department and the Harris County Sheriff's Department Reserves. Memorial contributions may be made to the Office of Correctional Ministries c/o Father Ron Cloutier, Harris County Sheriff's Department, 1200 Baker Street, Houston, Texas, 77002.
