Individual Details

Rosanna Nancy Wheeler

(15 Sep 1815 - 25 Sep 1897)

Rosanna is said to have had a son who was chosen by lots to be eaten by survivors of a shipwreck. She and Ebenezer were "shipwrecked and they had to draw lots as to whose child to kill to have food, and 'twas their child that was drawn. All ate of human flesh but great-great grandmother. Her lot was the child's forearm, and she carried it on her bosom and burried it in the U.S.A. near Oquawka, Illinois, where they landed."
Besides raising her family, Mrs. Armstrong taught school in Henderson County, Illinois.
Research compiled by Viola Craigmile with materials from the family bible of great aunt Sadie Hearn Glover and great uncle Frank Hearn. Sadie and Frank were the brother and sister of Viola's grandmother, Grace Hearn.
