Shari Daynes, age 93, passed on Sunday, October 30, 2016 in her home surrounded by her family.
Born June 18, 1923 in Salt Lake City to Dr. Charles Frederick Jr. and Sarah Eccles Wilcox. Shari grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of Southern California. She was president of her Chi Omega Chapter.
Shari married her sweetheart, Robert Frederick Daynes, on June 28, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple and became the mother of six children. Motherhood was her life's ambition.
She became known as the iconic "Tootsie Lady" as she touched the lives of thousands of high school students in Granite School District, teaching and giving small incentives, even playing penny hockey, tap dancing, and distributing Tootsie Rolls to the students.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Primary, Young Women's, and Relief Society auxiliaries, as well as being a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
Shari was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joy Cook (Martin). She is survived by her husband, Robert; brother, Dr. C. Fred Wilcox (Nancy); and children, Deborah Purdon (Douglas), Shari Weber (Garth), Katherine Broadbent (David), Heidi Darley (David), Fred Daynes (Laurie), and Richard Daynes (Teri); twenty-eight grandchildren, and forty great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive (1450 East). Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Forest View Ward Chapel, 1111 East Charlton Avenue (2818 South), with a viewing prior to the services from 9:45-10:45 a.m.
Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
