Mary Anna Derbyshire
(23 Nov 1814 - 13 Jan 1906)
Mary Anna Derbyshire was born near Cooperstown, N. Y., November 20, 1814, being the fifth child of Christopher Derbyshire and Emily Theresa Stickney Derbyshire. While still a small child, her parents removed to Westerfield, Chautauqua County, New York, then a wilderness, living there on a farm until around 1830, when they removed to Tecumseh, Mich., where in 1835, Miss Derbyshire was married to Phillip J. Hooker, and returned to New York, settling in Martinsburg.
Soon afterward Mr. Derbyshire with his family, moved to Pleasant Prairie, Wis., where in 1837, Mr. Hooker joined them, remaining there until 1866, when he joined the westward movement to Nebraska, taking up land between Camden and Milford on the Big Blue River.
Mr. Hooker died in 1885 at the home of their daughter, Mrs. J. J. Jensen in Geneva, Neb., where he is buried. Since his death, Mrs. Hooker has made her home wither children, having for some years lived with Mrs. Dole in Beatrice.
Born a pioneer, she four times moved to a newer west, each time contributing her part toward its improvement and prosperity.
She was all her life a pure Christian woman, and a consistent member of the Congregational church.
Four children survive her: Mrs. S. H. Dole and W. C. Hooker of Beatrice, Chris D. Hooker of Piedmont, S. D., and Mrs. Eva T Jensen of Enid, Ok.
The funeral took place from the Congregational Church in Geneva, Neb., at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 1906, and the interment was in the Geneva cemetery. All of the children were present at the funeral with the exception of Chris Hooker of South Dakota. Mrs. W. C. Hooker of Beatrice was present also.
