OBITUARY
John Hughes was born near Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan, July 4, 1843 and passed out of this life July 21, 1917, aged 74, and 17 days. In the Civil War he served in the artillery branch of the United States service three years and seven months.
He was married to Miss Julia Mahan, Nov. 22, 1867. To this union were born four children, all of whom were with their father in his last illness. They are Mrs. Letha Hurst, Mrs. Emma Nowels, Mr. Fred Hughes, and Mrs. Nellie Bachman. They with their mother mourn the loss of a faithful father and companion. Mr. Hughes and his family came to the state in 1870, locating on the farm which, ever since has been the family home. Forty-seven years, not many left of those who came in that early day.
Mr. Hughes served as commissioner of Howard county at the time of the division of the counties int Elk and Chautauqua counties and has been quite active in public affairs. He was industrious and upright.
Many friends regret his departure. The funeral took place at the farm home Sunday, July 22, conducted by Mr. N. Hill, assisted by Bro. Paul Palmer of the M.E. Church. Music arranged by Mrs. Clyde Bailey. Burial in Grace Lawn Cemetery near Howard, Kansas. Many friends were present at both the home and the cemetery.
